About "Between the Two Palaces"
"Palace Walk" is the first part of Naguib Mahfouz's renowned Cairo Trilogy, which also includes "Palace of Desire" and "Sugar Street." The novel portrays Egyptian society at the beginning of the 20th century through the family of Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad , the head of the household, who is tyrannical within his home but lenient outside of it. Through this work, Mahfouz presents a nuanced human portrait that captures the social and political transformations during the 1919 revolution, highlighting the contradiction between traditional values and modern changes. With his profound realism, Mahfouz emphasizes the generational conflict within a single household, making the street between the two palaces a vibrant symbol of Egypt in all its contradictions during that era.
(Publication information: Dar Al Shorouk - Modern Edition, Cairo, 582 pages. The novel gained its fame as part of Naguib Mahfouz's trilogy, which was one of the main reasons for his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988).
