About "Al-Sukariya"
Al-Sukkariya is the third part of Naguib Mahfouz's famous Cairo Trilogy, which begins with Palace Walk , then Palace of Desire , and ends with Al-Sukkariya . The novel takes place in the Al-Sukkariya neighborhood of Cairo and depicts the life of Mr. Ahmed Abdel Gawad's family between 1934 and 1943.
The novel begins with a tragic ending, as Aisha's two sons and husband die from typhoid fever. Aisha, once a vision of beauty, is transformed into a pale, sunken-eyed, and lifeless woman who smokes heavily and drinks coffee incessantly. All that remains for her is her sixteen-year-old daughter, Na'ima.
Al-Sukkariya is not just the end of a family story, but a symbolic end to an entire era, and an opening to a phase of doubt and fragmentation.
