About the novel
Eighteen-year-old Yella Brandt arrives in Amsterdam for the first time, staying at her husband Johannes's home. At first glance, the atmosphere is far from welcoming. Her sister-in-law is stern, and the housekeeper Cornelia is more sarcastic and outspoken than Yella was used to in her own home in Asdelft. The housekeeper Otto, however, is a unique enigma: African in complexion, but with a distinctly Amsterdam temperament.
Whenever Nila tries to meet with her husband, he slips away from her like quicksilver, using his travels and work as an excuse. But one day, he surprises her with a wedding gift: a dollhouse that perfectly matches their huge, luxurious home. Nila considers it an insult, but she decides to rebel and hire a dollmaker to furnish her new house.
The sculptures begin to arrive, exactly as she requested, with masterful craftsmanship. But it doesn't stop there; the dollmaker goes further and sends her sculptures she did not request, sculptures that carry messages and meaning, sculptures that hold a black box of secrets from that mysterious house.
The dollmaker is no longer just a craftsman, nor are his sculptures mere dolls; he is a prophet, and these are his miracles. Nila clings to him for salvation, but finds her hands grasping at nothingness.
