An overview of "Crime and Punishment"
"Crime and Punishment" is a masterpiece of world literature and Fyodor Dostoevsky's most famous work. Set in Saint Petersburg, the novel follows the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, a young student who develops a radical philosophical theory that allows exceptional individuals to commit crimes. He decides to murder the elderly pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna as a test of his exceptionalism. After the murder, the novel delves into the depths of the human psyche, as its protagonist suffers from pangs of conscience, illness, doubt, and loneliness in a tragic psychological journey that raises existential questions about good and evil, sin and redemption, and freedom and punishment. This novel is considered one of the greatest works ever written on the analysis of the human soul. The edition published by the Arab Cultural Center (eighth edition - 2023) , translated by Sami al-Durubi, is one of the most recent, accurate, widely circulated, and trusted Arabic editions.
